Finding the Fun in Cross Training: Rock Climbing
We've all seen them at races. They pass you effortlessly with perfectly toned arms, a strong back, and six-pack abs. For the majority of us, it would take long weekly runs, restricted diets, and years of hitting the pavement to achieve that physique strictly by running. Luckily, those perfectly sculpted people have a secret: they cross-train, and more than likely, they enjoy it.

Coach's Corner
With Coach Joe Marks

Forefoot striking for healthier running.
We tend to think of forefoot striking as the hallmark of fast runners, and a key to improving our own best times. But did you know that forefoot striking can also have many benefits in preventing running injuries? Coach Joe explains some of the ways in which a lighter forefoot strike can help you stay healthy and run with less pain.

About Coach Joe: Coach Joe is a running coach and personal trainer - and a close friend of Berkeley! Joe has a B.S. in exercise science, a CSCS certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and a Level 1 certification by USA Track & Field. Joe draws on more than 13 years of high-level competitive running experience in helping runners at any level take the next step toward their training and racing goals through individualized training plans.

Fireman Rob
An incredible athlete for an incredible cause.
The Berkeley Running Company is honored to help sponsor Madison's own Robert Verheist as he begins a heroic mission: "Fireman Rob" will complete 27 Ironman-distance triathlons in 2012, breaking the Guinness World Record to raise awareness for Code 3 for a Cure, a charitable organization dedicated to curing cancer as well as supporting the families of firefighters diagnosed with cancer.
Fireman Rob is an 11-year veteran of the Madison Fire Department. In 2011, to honor the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, Rob completed Ironman Wisconsin while wearing full firefighter turnout gear. This achievement inspired him to set his goal for 2012. Rob began his journey on January 8 in Naples, FL, and will continue to complete triathlons around the country, including Ironman Wisconsin on September 9 - number 17 of 27.
Berkeley is proud to support Fireman Rob, and we will keep the Berkeley community updated as he moves toward this incredible goal.
